Qualifications

Standard new applicant pathway (DI2024-276, Class A Method 1):

Qualifications - standard new applicant pathway

A tertiary qualification in building at AQF bachelor degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma, masters degree or doctoral degree level.
Documented minimum 2 years full-time building work experience, with at least 1 year full-time completed after the qualifying tertiary qualification was issued.
Undertake and pass an assessment set by the construction occupations registrar.
Method 1 applies where the applicant has not previously applied for or held a Class A licence, or a previous application was not granted for a reason other than failing the required assessment. DI2024-276 contains separate methods for previous assessment refusals and former Class A licence holders.

Experience

Mandatory building work experience standard

Experience must demonstrate the prescribed standards of competency on building projects greater than 3 storeys in height, across BCA classes 1 to 10 and including Type A construction, excluding basic building work and specialist building work.

The competency areas include building-law/code requirements, construction management, structural principles, building technology, plans/specifications, construction planning and quality assurance/verification.

A Class A applicant must demonstrate experience in more than 20 of the building-technology areas identified in Part 7, section 3 of DI2024-276.
